Billy Moore: Leading Offshore Powerboat Racer and Legacy Throttle Man

Billy Moore has earned his place among the top offshore powerboat racers of today. Following in the legendary footsteps of his father, Bobby Moore—often credited as the first throttle man in offshore powerboat racing—Billy now “works the sticks” in both Class 1 and Super Cat classes.

Wins at the Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge

I recently spoke with Moore as he celebrated a significant achievement: his Defalco Racing Class 1 team’s back-to-back victories at the Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Alongside his role in the Defalco Racing team, Moore is also the throttle man for the C.J. Grant Racing/Graydel Skater Super Cat.

A Legacy of Racing and Rigging Knowledge

Moore’s racing skills are built on a foundation of knowledge passed down from his father. Bobby Moore didn’t just teach his son how to race; he also shared essential insights into boat rigging and race boat setup. Moore recently discussed how the Defalco Racing team decided to switch from an Outer Limits hull to a Victory in the offseason, detailing both the challenges and rewards of this transition. Located near Moore’s home in Washington, North Carolina, the Defalco Racing team benefits greatly from his close involvement and expertise.

Leading the Future of Checkmate Powerboats

Beyond racing, Moore plays an influential role at Checkmate Powerboats, a renowned powerboat brand owned by Pete Caldwell and Caldwell Marine Designs. Moore shared updates on Checkmate’s future plans, including a possible race at the Parker Enduro out west.
